POPULATION
3 (1997 - 1999) |

|
Population 3 began as an interview session. I had an article in the Illinois Entertainer looking for creative musicians willing to create a new sound. Mark T was third on the list and was chosen as being the guitarist. In the weeks following we found a piano player and practiced weekly in the Flat Iron Building in Wicker Park, Chicago. In time Mark Iwanski became our bassist replacing our piano player. Mark, Mark and I rehearsed in various locations around Chicago. Our first gig was at the Big Horse Lounge in Wicker Park. We were named Quelt at this time which then became Mir. Phyllis' Musical Inn, The Elbo Room and Thurston's became commonplace when Mir went into Elmhurst College to record our first demo (cassette). Soon after our first demo, Mark T. sent our cassette to James Van Osdol, dj for mega-radio station Q101, hoping to be picked for the local spotlight. Our hopes paid off. On November 11th, 1997 we were played on the airwaves of Chicago. In the winter of 1998 Rob Marshall (Cave Recordings), recorded Population 3 in Mark Iwanski's apartment in Chicago. It was mastered in his parents basement that same year. In the spring of 1998 Mark Iwanski left the band and was replaced by a bassist who was a friend of Mark T. From there we played a few shows and mutually decided to call it quits in the winter of 1999. It was a good run while it lasted. |
